What Bloodwork Testing Happens at the Vet?

Just like humans need an annual physical, your pet should go to the vet once a year to ensure they are in good health. One of the many things we do during the diagnostic phase at the
Annual Wellness Exam is bloodwork. It is a critical piece of the puzzle when looking at your pet's overall health.

What are we looking for and why? This blog will go over what happens, what the most common tests are, and why it is so important.

Bloodwork typically includes:

  • chemistry panel
  • CBC
  • +/- thyroid

What is a Chemistry Panel?

The chemistry panel tests different chemicals and enzymes in the blood. Since it is measuring a mixture of different things, it can give a lot of information about your pet’s overall health, including:

  • glucose
  • calcium
  • sodium

What is a CBC?

A CBC, or “complete blood count” is a series of tests on certain blood cells. It can give indication of many health problems, including:

  • hydration status
  • anemia
  • infection
  • blood clotting ability
  • immune system response

What is Thyroid Testing?

The thyroid gland produces hormones that have a huge effect on the whole body, one example being regulating metabolism. If it is making too much or too little hormones, it can be devastating to your pet.

Hyperthyroidism (too much): Common in cats

Hypothyroidism (too little): Common in dogs

Annual Wellness Program

As mentioned above, bloodwork is already an aspect of your pet’s annual wellness appointment(s). If you are unfamiliar with our program, learn more here. Your pets' health and comfort is our priority.

Having your pet get their blood tested gives us an opportunity to catch health problems early, which is important because pet illness can escalate much quicker than it does in humans. Starting treatment as soon as possible can make all the difference.
